The hinoki wood soaking tub in the Corner Suite is the thing guests ask about most before booking. Some have used one before. Many have not. This is a straightforward explanation of what it is, what it is not, and how to get the most from it.
What hinoki wood is ¶
Hinoki is Japanese cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa. It has been used in Japanese bath construction for centuries, partly because it is naturally resistant to moisture and partly because of its scent. The smell is clean and slightly resinous, similar to cedar but lighter. A new hinoki tub has a strong scent that mellows over time. The tub in the Corner Suite has been in use since 2019, so the scent is present but not overwhelming. Most guests find it pleasant. If you are sensitive to wood scents, it is worth knowing in advance.
How it differs from a standard tub ¶
A hinoki tub is deeper than a standard Western bathtub, designed for soaking in a seated position rather than lying down. The water level comes up to chest height when seated. The tub at Flowing Shore Panorama holds enough water for one person comfortably. The water is heated to around 41 degrees Celsius, which is the standard Japanese bath temperature. If you prefer it cooler, mention it when you request the fill and we will adjust. The experience is closer to an onsen than to a hotel bath.
How to request it and what to expect ¶
The tub is filled on request, not automatically. To have it ready when you arrive, mention it when you book or send a message to stay@flowingshorepanorama.com at least 24 hours before your arrival. We will confirm the request and have the tub filled and at temperature when you check in. If you decide you want it filled after you arrive, we can usually do it within about an hour, depending on the time of day.
Looking after the tub during your stay ¶
After you finish bathing, place the wooden lid back on the tub. This helps the wood dry evenly and prevents warping. Do not use soap or shampoo in the tub itself. There is a separate shower in the Corner Suite bathroom for washing before you soak, which is the standard Japanese approach. There is a small card in the room with the same instructions. The tub is cleaned and inspected after each guest stay.
If you have questions about the Corner Suite or the hinoki tub before booking, the full room description is on the rooms page, or write to us directly. We would rather answer a question in advance than have you arrive with the wrong expectation.
