Summer is the busiest season on the Izu Peninsula, and it is also genuinely beautiful. The sea is warm enough to swim in from late June, the festivals run through August, and the evenings on the coast are cooler than in Tokyo. But it requires a bit of planning, particularly around accommodation and transport.
When it gets busy and when it does not ¶
The peak period is the Obon holiday week in mid-August, typically around 13 to 16 August. Accommodation fills up weeks in advance for those dates, and the roads from Tokyo are congested on the Friday before and the Sunday after. Outside of Obon, weekends in July and early August are busy but manageable. Weekdays in July are often surprisingly quiet, even at popular spots. If you have flexibility, a Tuesday to Thursday stay in mid-July gives you summer weather without the crowds.
The heat and how to deal with it ¶
Ito in July and August averages around 28 to 31 degrees Celsius during the day. The coast gets a sea breeze that makes it more comfortable than inland Shizuoka, but it is still hot. The coast path between Ito and Kawana is best walked before 9:00 or after 17:00 in summer. The Kinomiya Shrine grove is shaded and stays noticeably cooler than the open streets. Rooms at Flowing Shore Panorama have air conditioning, and the common area is kept cool during the day.
Summer festivals near Ito ¶
The Kawana fireworks are usually held in mid-July, launching from the beach south of the guesthouse. The Ito Onsen Summer Festival runs for three days in early August, with a street procession on the middle evening. Both are within easy reach without a car. We post specific dates on the news section of this site as they are confirmed each year, because official dates sometimes shift by a day or two.
Booking in summer ¶
For July stays, booking two to three weeks in advance is usually enough. For August, particularly the week around Obon, booking six to eight weeks ahead is more realistic if you want a specific room type. The Corner Suite and the Ocean View Standard Rooms on the upper floors go first. The Hillside Twin Room tends to have more availability because it does not have a sea view.
